about

The guitar melody that this song is built around existed for a long time as the outro to another song I've written.

One day I was playing around on it and a song so naturally unfolded from Ashley. She just started singing, and fortunately we had a microphone running to catch the improv.

It's a fitting title, Gently Speaking, so much so that we've named the whole EP after it.

Relationships have challenges. People tend to scream and yell at one another, but that doesn't often serve any one.

I find it natural to speak softly. Even when irritated and impatient. Hah!

It's not only about speaking gently when we are angry. It is a way of living and communicating - with gentility.

Lao Tzu says "The soft overcomes the hard; the gentle overcomes the rigid. Everyone knows this is true, but few can put it into practice."

Here's to practicing that.

lyrics

Gentle was the language we were speaking
It's not lost on me
I feel everything
All the way

It's not the hardest thing I've ever done
We sit still in this moment - we are one

Guide me to the brightest, kindest kind of love
This loveliness I found in my heart

I am open to this loss
These chains around my soulful soul
I know that you are here with me

I give up controlling this
All the way

It's not the hardest thing I've ever done
We sit still in this moment we are one
