about

Times Infinity is the ultimate.

I remember being a kid in the playground and pulling out the times infinity card in response to others saying times two, or times 10, or times 100. Times infinity is unbeatable. It takes you beyond the measurable.

When I started this project I wanted to make something that would be so great. The title is also somewhat inspired by John Frusciante's album, 'the Empyrean'. To me, the Empyrean is his magnum opus. Literally meaning 'the highest part of heaven', I find that album to be the pinnacle of modern music. Not only is it beautifully composed but the lyrics read like a holy scripture.

I consider music to be a vehicle to reach beyond the material world and there are not many albums that compare to the effect that the Empyrean had on me. I wanted to at least try to make something to that effect.

Most of the music was created in short bursts in a three week period. Consecutive hours spent diving deep into the track. Some of them were arranged in just one sitting.

At the time, December 2020, I was involved in a number of group projects and was feeling the need to start a solo album - something I could control fully.

The result was this eight song album, built entirely from samples downloaded off of splice dot com.

I've been a part of many bands and recording projects. I've recorded myself, and been recorded by amazing producers. This process was very different. Rather than writing riffs, each song begins with a curation process. Finding samples, sounds and textures that will work together. As I start pulling the samples into my digital workstation the song starts to take shape and I gradually shift from the search for samples into building the arrangement. Once the project is arranged, I start mixing.

The album is very progressive. It moves quickly. It does not linger on ideas. Most of the tracks on here are between 1:30 and 2:00.

I've been listening to lo-fi chill hop for a decade, but this is my first production anywhere close to that genre. You can possibly hear how I've been influenced by Emancipator and Nujabes if you know what to listen for.

Thanks for checking me out. If you like what you hear visit www.danielsalij.com to learn more about me.

This project was then merged with it's follow up album "continuum" see below.

This is my follow up album to Times Infinity. It is made in the same style, that is purely sample based. That means I acted more as a curator and arranger than a performer. I built the album entirely using sounds I found on www.splice.com. For a look at my creative process, check out this video: www.youtube.com/watch?v=YR9tnTjGsz8&t=289s
